Charter of Rights

In our association, every child has the right to:

1. Be respected and included

Every child is treated with kindness and respect and included in activities in ways that fit who they are.

2. Be listened to

Children can share their ideas, preferences, and feelings in their own way (speech, pictures, devices, gestures), and adults listen to them and integrate them into the activities.

3. Get extra help when needed

Children can receive support, adaptations, and breaks (quieter spaces, visual supports, movement breaks) to help them participate safely and comfortably.

4. Learn and play

All children have the right to different learning approaches and to play at their own pace, in ways that respect their interests and needs.

5. Feel safe

Our spaces are free from physical or emotional harm. If something does not feel safe, children and families should tell us, and we will act.

6. Have privacy and dignity

Personal information is kept confidential, and children receive care (e.g., hygiene and feeding) in ways that protect their dignity.

7. Stay connected to family and culture

We respect each child’s family, language, culture, and identity, and we work in partnership with parents, carers, and wider family.

8. Be part of decisions

When we plan activities, rules, or changes, we ask children (in ways they can access) and their families for input to adapt what makes sense for them.

9. Ask questions and complain

Families and children can question the approaches of adults. We listen, explain, and work collaboratively to solve problems.

10. Be themselves

Children do not have to hide who they are; they are accepted and valued as they are.

This charter is inspired by the European Charter for Persons with Autism and by international children’s and disability rights, adapted to the reality of 6 Sentidos Associação.
